METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing gum from concrete depends on the gum’s age and level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left recently and it hasn’t penetrated the surface, we are sometimes able to remove it by covering it with ice until it freezes, then scraping it off with a putty knife.

The ice forces the gum to freeze into a more forgiving consistency compared to a gooey and stringy mess. Once the gum is frozen, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper under the gum residue. After that we slide the scraper very slowly under the gum and the whole piece should then peel right off of the concrete.

The above method is only possible with gum that is brand new.

When we remove gum that has turned black, or is smashed down into the concrete, we use a hot water power washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees to melt the chewing gum. For this type of gum removal, we won’t use high pressure because that might harm the surface of the concrete!

Our crew never uses any more pressure than needed to clean commercial concrete. These surfaces can be destroyed much easier than most people think, especially if they’re only a couple of years old. Concrete can take up to 100 years to cure. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our professional chewing gum removal professional.
