10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects

outdoor spring cleaning

Spring cleaning is not always fun for most of us. But it is important. As the holidays and winter end and we start looking forward to spring, something within us tells us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and getting rid of things we’ve collected throughout the winter.

But who says spring cleaning is limited to the interior of a home?
The outside of your house could use a little refreshing after a cold, wet winter, too!

It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning

Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will really improve the curb appeal of your house in Baytown, and, more importantly, will offer much-needed maintenance and upkeep that will save a lot ofmoney over the years ahead.

1. Gutter Cleaning

Spring is the best time to clean out your gutters, since so many of leaves and debris pile up in the fall and winter. The pollen count is at its highest in the spring, making a mess in your gutters if they are not cleaned.

Plus, bugs and critters are looking for places to build homes in spring, so getting your gutters cleaned out will help to prevent an infestation in your home.

Gutter cleaning will consist of cleaning the inside and outside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew, stains and returning them to a nice appearance.

2. Window Cleaning

Exterior window cleaning is necessary for spring cleaning. Ground floor windows shouldn’t cause you too much of a headache, but second and third floor windows can be trickier to reach.

Cleaning windows by hand is a hard chore, and will need a lot of supplies, not to mention going up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your exterior windows is the perfect solution to get the panes and the outer frame nice and clean.

3. Pressure Washing

You aren’t going to want clean gutters and clean windows on a dirty home. Which means you are going to want to pressure wash your house too!

Pressure washing is quick, effective and affordable. You can pressure clean your home, outdoor furniture, concrete patios, wood and stone porches and walkways with very little effort. It will knock off dirt and mud so they won’t permanently stain your house, and you can prevent the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.

4. Driveway Cleaning

Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a deep cleaning might seem counter-productive since you’ll still be driving on it, but, a clean, cared for driveway can increase the curb appeal of your house.

A professional pressure washing service will do wonders for driveway cleaning, whether it’s concrete, asphalt, stone or some other material. Also think about adding a gravel or mulch border to your home’s driveway to really make it stand out!

5. Patio Cleaning

Your home’s patio gets the most use throughout the summer, so it can be easy to forget about it in the winter since you are not doing a lot of outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio can be in pretty rough shape the first time you walk onto it in the spring.

Soap and water – and a little hard work – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if you notice signs of mold or algae, you may need to think about a more aggressive option, like power washing, to ensure that friends and family can safely enjoy your patio all summer long.

6. Roof Cleaning

Mold and moss are typical roof issues in Baytown. While you’re cleaning the outside of your house, it’s a great time to pressure clean your home’s roof as well, but you’ll need to use a different method than what you use for most of your home’s exterior.

If you notice streaks on your home’s roof, algae is most likely the cause. Moss is pretty obvious, too. These contaminants cannot be scrubbed off shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof of your house. Both of these methods will damage the shingles on your home’s roof.

The best course of action for roof cleaning is to spray the shingles with a half-bleach, half-water solution and then let it sit. This solution will kill any organisms on your home’s roof without reducing its lifespan.

7. Tidy up the Front

The front of your house is what most people passing by see, so make the best impression you can for visitors, neighbors and for yourself! Returning home to a well-maintained exterior will instantly improve your day, and will probably inspire you to spend more time outdoors.

You can clean your front porch with detergent and water or a good pressure wash. Wipe cobwebs and mud off of the front porch, and consider painting it for a fresh look! Clean overlooked areas such as the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.

8. Organize Garden Tools

You will soon be spending much more time outside, so spring is a wonderful opportunity to organize the things you’ll need for outdoor work.

Yard tools and pool care equipment need to all have an exact place outside your house – a place that it is safe from weather and not in sight so it is not a constant eyesore. Taking the time to organize in the spring will allow you to enjoy the outside of your house so much more throughout the time of year when you spend the most time outdoors.

9. Lawn Care & Landscaping

Your yard, trees and garden bushes make a big impact on the overall look of your house.

Kill weeds around the exterior of your flower beds and walkways, till up areas where you might be planting in the future and sweep off walkways. You can spray pre-emergent weed poison to make yard care easier on yourself throughout the summer. Trim all the bushes too.

10. Clean the Grill

After being unused for months, your grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but they can make you and your family sick.

Wipe it down to get rid of leftover ash, then scrub the grates with a scrubber (so you don’t leave behind particles that can get into food) and a basic detergent or degreaser.
